Digestive System Illnesses

Digestive System Illnesses

Within the digestive system is the intestinal tract which begins at the mouth and ends with the anus. In between are the stomach and the large and small intestines. The digestive system is responsible for giving the body all the nutrients it needs to function properly. Actually, the responsibility lies with you and me as well. If we feed ourselves junk food all the time we can’t expect our body to perform very well. What we can expect however are some digestive system illnesses!

With our modern western diet which is primarily high processed foods at every turn, it’s not surprising that most of our population suffers from at least one of the very common digestive system illnesses. Let’s have a quick look at some of these:

Acid Reflux

Indigestion, and heartburn are other common names that fall under the acid reflux category.  This is another digestive system illness that manifests itself through upper abdominal pain and discomfort which becomes worse after eating food. It can be alleviated by taking acidophilus, avoiding fatty foods and also avoiding the foods that trigger indigestion.

Constipation can happen to anyone at any age. This disorder is usually caused directly by a low fiber diet. With our terrible quality processed food it’s no wonder so many people have this symptom so often. A british physician conducted and experiment involving the diets of rural African tribesmen and Englishmen.

The Englishmen who’s diet consisted of the typical modern processed foods had at most one bowel movement a day to a few per week. The African who’s diet consisted of mostly grains, fruits and vegetables, in other words, a high fiber diet had as many as 5-6 bowel movements a day!

The reason for this experiment was because this physician noticed that these rural Africans didn’t get any of the common digestive system illnesses that we are so familiar with in the western world.

Crohnns disease

It manifests itself through inflammation usually in the small or large intestine. One experiences bouts of diarrhea, pain in the abdomen, lack of appetite and weight-loss. This condition has been mostly attributed to consumption of excess sugar in the diet. Intolerance to some types of food might also trigger this condition. One of the most effective remedies in alleviating this condition is taking acidophilus which is found in probiotics .This is because these useful bacteria will control the growth of those bacteria which cause this condition.

Irritable bowel syndrome is another digestive system illness. It manifests itself through constipation and diarrhea which can keep on alternating, pain in the abdomen and also feelings of bloating. It can be caused by food intolerances, lack of fiber in the diet, being consumed with stress. Many people who suffer from this condition have also been found as having the Candida bacteria or parasites in their intestinal tract.

To treat this condition, water is recommended between meals to loosen the stool during moments of constipation and also for diarrhea to prevent dehydration. Taking acidophilus is quite effective especially if the person has an attack of Candida since it can inhibit its growth. Taking antioxidants is also recommended in order to rid the body of the toxins which cause inflammation.
