Acid Reflux

Digestive Problems and Symptoms – Acid Reflux

In this article we”ll discuss the common digestive problem acid reflux. There are many different names used by us regular folks, and even doctors to describe this digestive discomfort:

  • Gas
  • Gastritis
  • Heartburn
  • Indigestion
  • Dyspepsia
  • Hiatus hernia
  • Peptic ulcer
  • Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD)

Whatever we call it, the feeling can be a very uncomfortable burning pain in the stomach or chest. The reasons can be from some sort of disagreement between you and the food you ate.

But it can also be a sign of a digestive system that is under strain, which may require further medical investigation and treatment.

Dyspepsia, as doctors refer to it, is a general name given to several symptoms, or disorders of the digestive system concerning burning pain in the upper abdomen:

  • Indigestion
  • Heartburn
  • Acid reflux

Indigestion is generally not very serious and can be caused by overeating, poor digestion, sensitivity to certain food, or having too little gastric acid.

What you should do is improve your digestion. This can be done with diet modification.

What you shouldn’t do is expect an antacid medicine to cure the problem because it won’t.

If this happens only once in a while when you overindulge on a rare meal or when you eat a food you are suspicious of then it’s probably not serious but tell your doctor, also if you are regurgitating acid every day.

Angina pain is one associated with the heart and that’s why it’s often called heartburn as well. Heartburn can be simply from poor indigestion reasons as well but if it is accompanied by pain in the arms or neck it should be checked out.

Acid reflux

Acid reflux or GERD can be a little more involved and be caused by a peptic ulcer, gallstones, gastritis, hiatus hernia, or IBS and can improved by dietary changes… hint – prebiotics!

Doctor’s recommendations have changed

It was once believed that eating fruits and vegetables was a no-no because they contain acids and that would aggravate the acids in our stomach. But the acid in fruits is different than the acid in our stomach and what used to be recommended was a bland diet, is now changed to eating fruits and vegetables again because of a better understanding of our digestive system.

Digestive aids and supplements?

Don’t waste your time with these. Products like antacids only mask symptoms and at most supply temporary relief. Get to the cause of the problem which involves improving your digestive system all around. Besides, store-bought products contain artificial colors, preservatives, and sugar… more junk for a digestive system to deal with.
