Benefits of Prebiotic & Probiotics

The Benefits of Prebiotic and Probiotics

best-digestive-enzymesI’ve noticed some articles and ads squabbling over some of the supposed benefits of prebiotics and probiotics and their huge claims because many are yet to be substantiated.

It doesn’t really matter though because we have had enough reports of some already proven benefits, and in this early stage of research it’s good to know there is some real progress being made that may prove positive sometime down the line, and that’s good news for all of us.

Meanwhile we can start enjoying some of the foods that contain these nutrients and start to improve our digestive health naturally. Much of the research being done today is focusing on both prebiotics and probiotics working together. Some people aren’t really sure of the difference in these two if any so here is some clarification:

Probiotics – microorganisms living in our intestines, sometimes called microbes, good bacteria, probiotic bacteria.

Prebiotics – a group of nutrients found in specific foods we consume.

So you see, these are totally different from each other but because probiotics are not self-supporting, they depend on nutrients to feed on and grow and these nutrients come from prebiotics. A diet which focuses heavily on getting probiotics from supplements but ignores proper prebiotic intake for quality nutrients will not have the effect one is expecting. This is why research is being done on the benefits of these as a team.

So what are the health benefits?

By taking prebiotics to increase probiotic population in the intestinal tract it has been shown to help with these digestive symptoms:

  • constipation
  • diverticulitis
  • high blood pressure
  • high colesterol
  • diarrhea
  • inflammatory bowel disease
  • irritable bowel syndrome
  • eczema
  • asthma
  • allergies
  • yeast infections

Research links prebiotics to helping with colon cancer

Prebiotics are not digested while they make their way through our digestive system. Their powerful nutrients such as fiber, enzymes, and phenols get eaten up by probiotic bacteria and what ever is left over ends up in the large intestine (colon). There it starts a fermentation process in which special molecules called short-chain fatty acids are produced. These acids destroy some of the pathogens which prevent them from forming tissue cells on the colon wall. This is an extremely important function because it’s these cells that can eventually form polyps that over time can become cancerous.

There’s much research still being done and we can be sure of more exciting news about discoveries regarding even more benefits of prebiotics and probiotics.

Where there’s smoke there’s fire

Recently we posted a link that talked about how the largest food company in the world, Nestle, made announcements of their upcoming ventures into the medicine food market. Their primary focus is on prebiotic supplements, stating how they see the future of prevention over a dependence on pharmaceutical drugs being pushed on us by ads and doctor’s prescriptions.

We, the people with a keen interest on getting our health back by way of natural sources need to take a good long look at the side effects that some of these pharmaceutical drugs are capable of doing. Sometimes a known side effect turn out to be a more serious disease than the symptom or disease we wanted to cure in the first placeā€¦ how crazy is that!
